COSMHYC develops and tests an innovative combined compression solution based on a hybrid concept for hydrogen refuelling stations (HRS).
The objectives are to lower the costs and the noise level of hydrogen refuelling and to further increase the availability of stations. This will contribute to the efficiency of hydrogen conditioning and delivery.
By developing a new compression technology, COSMHYC addresses the major challenge of assuring an attractive hydrogen fuel price at the pump.
The project results of COSHMYC will lead to an overall reduction of about 20% of the hydrogen costs thanks to:
Innovative compression solutions for efficient hydrogen mobility.

Project Call: FCH-01-8-2020
Duration: 01/2021 – 12/2023
Coordinator: European Institute for Energy Research (EIFER)
Partners: EIFHYTEC, NEL, Steinbeis Europa Zentrum (SEZ), Communauté de Communes Touraine Vallée de l’Indre (CCTVI), MAHYTEC
COSMHYC DEMO is the third project in the FCH JU–funded COSMHYC series, following COSMHYC (2017) and COSMHYC XL (2019). Building on previous developments of innovative hydrogen compression technology, the project will demonstrate a full-scale prototype at a dual-pressure hydrogen refueling station (HRS) in Tours, France. The system will serve a local fleet of fuel cell vehicles and compress up to 200 kg of hydrogen per day, proving its efficiency, reliability, cost-effectiveness, and flexibility.
EIFER coordinates the project, oversees data monitoring and evaluation, defines the hybridization concept, and contributes to the design, manufacturing, and testing of the filling center.
The project’s main outcomes include a techno-economic assessment of the compression solution, enhanced expertise in HRS technologies, and strengthened safety and regulatory knowledge for commercial hydrogen installations.

Project Call:FCH-01-7-2018 Improvement of innovative compression concepts for large scale transport applications
Duration: 01/2019 – 12/2022
Coordinator: European Institute for Energy Research (EIFER)
Partners: Nel Hydrogen, MaHyTec Sarl, Steinbeis 2i GmbH (S2i), Ludwig-Bölkow-Systemtechnik GmbH (LBST)
COSMHYC XL develops an innovative compression concept for large-scale hydrogen refueling of fuel cell electric vehicles. The project aims to lower hydrogen production costs and make hydrogen a competitive fuel for large-scale mobility.
EIFER coordinates the project, leads the development of the new compression concept, and oversees long-term testing of the compressor system under real-world conditions.
The project will increase hydrogen compression efficiency by over 30%, reducing both production and refueling station costs. Its modular and flexible design will enable adaptation to various large-scale transport applications and support wider deployment of hydrogen technologies.
